Character Cocktail: Blue Screen (Kenny Stowton)

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

I am so grateful to my roommate Aubrey for introducing me to Killing Eve. After watching season 1 on her recommendation, we watched season 2 together. Self-quarantining with our respective families won’t stop us from doing the same with season 3. Since she works Sunday nights, we can’t watch it live. So, we record the episode, plan what we’re going to drink, and FaceTime while watching on Monday evening.

The Character: Kenny Stowton

I always planned to make a Character Cocktail for this show, but I couldn’t decide who to use as inspiration. I was toying with some ideas for a Villanelle cocktail, but after the season 3 premiere last week, we had to create a drink for another of our favorite characters: Kenny Stowton, the hacker-turned-MI6-tech-whiz on the team hunting Villanelle. Kenny is extremely intelligent and can be, as Sean Delaney—the actor who portrays him—says, “very emotionally restrained and a bit emotionally inarticulate.” He also cares strongly about his work and the people around him.

The Cocktail (sort of): Blue Screen

Creating a drink for Kenny was more challenging than my previous Character Cocktails for two reasons. The first is that I wanted to use ingredients that Aubrey also had so that we could both drink this while watching episode 2 tonight. The second reason is that Aubrey and I both see Kenny as a beer person, not a cocktail person.

We toyed with a few ideas but ultimately decided on this beer-and-a-shot combo named after the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. The Valencia orange and coriander notes in Blue Moon balance well with the earthy, spicy flavor profile of tequila and the bright, sweet flavors of blue curaçao and pineapple juice. The surprise addition of chocolate bitters adds a dark, rich note that ties the tequila, beer, and fruit flavors together.

Preparation:

In an ice-filled cocktail shaker, combine tequila, blue curaçao, juice, and bitters (if using). Shake well and pour into shot glass. Serve with Blue Moon.

Do you think this drink accurately represents Kenny? Is there another character that you would like me to create a cocktail for? Let me know in the comments!

You can watch Killing Eve on BBC America or AMC.
